Best surf beaches in Crete

When you think of Crete, visions of turquoise waters, ancient ruins, and mouthwatering cuisine likely come to mind. But this stunning Greek island also boasts a growing reputation as a surf destination — thanks to its varied coastline, reliable winds, and hidden gem beaches. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a curious beginner, Crete offers waves for every level.

Here’s your guide to the best surf spots on the island:

1. Kouremenos Beach (Palaikastro, East Crete)

Best for: Windsurfing & advanced surfers
Wave Type: Wind swell, choppy waves
Season: May to October

Kouremenos is considered the windsurfing capital of Crete. With the famous Meltemi wind blowing strong from May through October, it’s a paradise for wind and kite surfers. Although it’s better known for windsurfing than wave riding, the long beach and wind consistency make it a great spot for experienced surfers looking for something different.

2. Falassarna Beach (West Crete)

Best for: Intermediate & advanced surfers
Wave Type: Beach break, strong swells
Season: Autumn & Winter (October–March)

Facing the open sea of the west coast, Falassarna gets solid swells during the off-season. When the storms roll in from the Mediterranean, they send clean, rideable waves toward the sandy beach. While summer is calm and great for swimmers, winter transforms Falassarna into one of the best surf spots on the island.

3. Kalamaki Beach (South Crete, near Heraklion)

Best for: Beginner to intermediate
Wave Type: Gentle beach break
Season: Autumn, early Spring

Kalamaki is one of the more accessible and forgiving beaches for those starting out. Small, manageable waves and a sandy bottom make it ideal for learning to surf. Local surf schools occasionally operate here, especially when conditions line up in the shoulder seasons.

4. Amoudara Beach (Near Heraklion, North Coast)

Best for: Beginners & surf lessons
Wave Type: Wind swell
Season: Spring to Autumn

This long, city-adjacent beach just west of Heraklion offers decent wind swell conditions and is a go-to spot for local surf schools. While the waves are not particularly powerful, they are consistent enough during certain periods of the year for longboarders and learners.

 5. Kommos Beach (Near Matala, South Crete)

Best for: Intermediate surfers
Wave Type: Reef and beach break combo
Season: Autumn & Winter

Kommos Beach is exposed to southern swells, making it one of the few south coast beaches that can offer real surf potential. When conditions are right, it produces decent left and right waves — plus, it’s far less crowded than beaches on the north coast.

When to Surf in Crete?

  • Summer (June–August): Best for windsurfing and beginners; the surf is usually small.

  • Autumn (September–November): Best time for actual surfing; more consistent swells, fewer tourists.

  • Winter (December–February): Solid waves on north and west coasts, but colder and more unpredictable.

  • Spring (March–May): Shoulder season with occasional good days and warmer weather.

While Crete isn't yet a global surf hub like Bali or the Algarve, you’ll find surf schools in places like Heraklion, Falassarna, and Palaikastro. These schools offer lessons, board rentals, and guided surf trips to nearby beaches depending on the day’s conditions.
